Technology Advice You Can Trust

Hi, I'm Dave Hyndman. I am a senior IT consultant providing CIO-level advice to small & medium businesses, non-profits and government departments and agencies.

LibraryLookup Bookmarklet for PEI Provincial Library

The PEI Provincial Library have finally ditched their terrible, Java-based web catalog with the more standard iPac 2.0. This significantly improves speed and usability but there's another benefit: I've been able to create a bookmarklet based on Jon Udell's LibraryLookup project. The bookmarklet allows you to jump from a book listing on sites like Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, BN, etc. (apparently any site with the book's ISBN in the URL) to that book's page on the PEI Library system. Then you're one click away from requesting the book.

More on Jon's project here, including tips for best results.

And here's the PEI Provincial LibraryLookup bookmarklet (drag it to your browser's toolbar). One caveat: I am using the actual IP address as I couldn't get this to work using the normal URL (http://www.library.pe.ca/abbycat/). If the IP address changes, this will break.

One last note. I'm using Mozilla Firebird, which blocks pop-ups by default. I have had to allow pop-ups for Amazon for this to work.
